Vote for a Filipino 2009 CNN “Hero of the Year”!

VOTE FOR A FILIPINO TO BE CNN’S 2009 “HERO OF THE YEAR”: It is not very often that a Filipino is given the chance to be recognized internationally for the good things that he has done or is doing, and so everyone of us should aspire to help a kababayan, Efren Penaflorida, to be voted as “CNN Hero of the Year”.

Voting is now on-going, and anyone who has an Internet connection or an email address can vote for him. Voting is until Thursday, November 19, 2009, 6 a.m., Atlanta, USA time, but I suggest we vote, and encourage others to vote likewise, now.

I just voted for Efren myself and so I am encouraging all Filipinos who are here or abroad to vote for him likewise, and help him win US$100,000.00 which he will use to put up schools for poor children here in the Philippines.

How to vote for Efren Penaflorida? Let us read a forwarded email coming from former UP Prof. Cesar Torres (cesar1185@aol.com) so we will know how:

“Dear Bueno Family: Efren, a fellow Filipino, is one of CNN's 2009 10 Heroes to be recognized at the Kodak Theatre on Thanksgiving Day in Hollywood!! How cool is that? There were 9,000 nominees from around the world. Well, that is SOMETHING!!

HERE IS HOW TO VOTE FOR EFREN PENAFLORIDA: “One out of these 10 heroes will be given $100,000 based on total number of votes cast by November 19th. I am writing to ask EVERYONE to please help me help Efren win this award of $100,000.

“Go to the site (see below) and VOTE as many times as you possible. You can vote as many times as you want! The money will help his group teach poor children using their pushcarts.

“…Voting continues until Thursday, November 19, 2009 (6 a.m. ET). There is no limit on the number of times you may vote for the Hero of the Year. Gracias por haber votado. La votación continuará hasta el jueves 19 de noviembre de 2009 (6am hora de Atlanta). Vote de Nuevo. See you at the voting site, Peeps!! Love, Manang and Tita A…”

In a subsequent email, Prof. Cesar Torres shared the following link to be used in voting for Penaflorida (just go to this link, and follow the instructions to enable you to vote):

SIX PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES NOW CONFIRMED TO RUN IN THE MAY 2010 POLLS: With the announcement Sunday of former Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. of the Department of Public Works and Highways that he is indeed also running for the presidency in the May 2010 elections, there are now six confirmed presidential candidates that will slug it out next year.

The others are former President Joseph Estrada, Sen. Manuel Villar, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., Senator Noynoy Aquino and Jesus Is Lord chief Brother Eddie Villanueva.

Of the six contenders, only two---Estrada and Aquino---have confirmed vice presidential candidates: Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay for Estrada and Sen. Manuel Roxas for Sen. Aquino. The others are either still in the process of selecting their running mates or are simply unable to find one.

This is perceived by many as unhealthy as it breeds political insstability, because it results in greater division and polarization of the electorate and of our leaders.

From another point of view, however, having more than two presidential candidates really gives us the opportunity of having more choices as to who will run this country henceforth.

VISIT OF ELIZABETH CONFIRMS BLESSINGS TO MARY: “Visitation” is what Roman Catholic Christians call the second mystery in the Mysteries of Joy (or Joyful Mysteries) of the Holy Rosary, and it is an account of Mary, the Virgin Mother of Jesus, visiting her ageing but pregnant cousin Elizabeth, wife of Zechariah, just after Mary had an encounter with Gabriel, the Angel of God.

The account of the “Visitation” is narrated in Luke 1:39 to 45 of the Bible, and there we will see that upon Mary’s arrival at the house of Elizabeth and Zechariah, the baby which was in the womb of Elizabeth leaped inside her, with the Holy Spirit coming down upon mother and baby.

In a loud voice, Elizabeth exclaimed to Mary: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear”, confirming Mary’s status as someone blessed by God, as well as the holy status of her child.

Significantly, these words of Elizabeth are now enshrined in the Holy Rosary where the faithful intone: “Hail Mary, full of grace, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.”

What is more, the greeting in that prayer, “hail Mary, full of grace”, is the very same greeting that Mary got from Gabriel, the Angel of God, when it was announced to her that she will be with a child who will be called Jesus (Luke 1:28).

Elizabeth then confirmed the blessings that would come to anyone who believes in God, when she said to Mary: “Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished…”
